O hai, a drabble Was glancing through my journal from the past couple of months, and I found this, which was supposed to begin a story that didn't end up existing. And since it stands well enough on its own, here it is. Fandom: PotC Title: Fait Accompli Rating: PG Pairing: J/E Summary: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, and Jack, of course, is ever so sane. A moment One of several moments from AWE that broke my heart a little lot. A little late for TLAPD, but I wrote it two months ago, if that counts. Do I even have to say "angst"? It's begun Posting this from the King Hall law library (on break--we get three hours of free time this week and we don't have any big reading assignments yet.) I'm really enjoying taking advantage of the UC Davis wireless internet, and getting to use my laptop to take notes in class. Our profs have repeatedly scolded us about using the internet while in class, which I admit to doing a couple times briefly--for good cause only, as I'm still trying to iron out housing issues. But I prefer not to, because honestly, who has time to do that and why? What's being discussed in class is way more interesting than surfing the web. And that's me, the information addict, saying that! I'm really having the time of my life so far. Intro Week, of course, is not Real Law School yet--lots of orientation stuff, an Intro to Law course, minimal reading. But the Intro to Law class basically gives us just a little taste of various subjects we'll be studying later on, and I absolutely love it. The profs are not at all boring. My classmates are nice, articulate, intelligent people--some of them intimidatingly so, but I appreciate that too, as it's stimulating--and excited about the same things I am. We've had some great alumni guest speakers who've given us advice and pep talks, and really gotten me excited about the practice as well as the study of law. In fact, I have no complaints except that my backpack is freaking heavy these days and I don't even have my reading assignments for fall yet. I truly feel like I'm in the right place, and that is a huge relief. My stress levels have actually gone way down since Monday morning, rather than the other way around. Oh, and I know someone here! My former roommate Becka is now my classmate! We had no idea prior to Sunday night when we saw each other at the intro barbeque. Extra coolness. Happy Lovecraft's Birthday! …”It’s All Right,” said Eeyore, looking into the dark waters again. “This Sort of Thing was Bound to Happen. Just a question of the Stars being Right, I suppose.”
“I mean,” he continued, as the surface of the water was torn asunder and a mass of hideous, churning flesh rose into view, “what else was I supposed to Expect?”
“There’s Rabbit,” he said, as the blasphemous mouth of the being from the depths opened in a scream. “He’s Energetic, Rabbit is, but he will Meddle in the Forbidden Arts. And then there’s Owl. Owl is very intelligent, but I’m afraid that in some of the older and more unsettling texts in his house he may have seen things that have driven him into shrill unreasoning madness. And then there’s Tigger. No earthly creature could possibly Bounce quite so much as Tigger.” Via cleolinda and Making Light, where the commenters do this kind of literary mash-up all the time, but not always to such delightful effect. Along similar lines: The Great Old Pumpkin. "I committed everything I knew to memory, burned all my papers, and embroidered my most unfathomable and precious secrets in near-invisible thread on my security blanket, which as you can see, I carry still." In other news, scientists are developing artificial life and a time machine. Sadly, the theoretical time machine can only be used to travel back in time to after the machine was built. I'm holding out for a TARDIS in the classic blue. Current Mood: amused | | Saturday, August 11th, 2007 | | 4:40 pm |
Craving a little UNreality You know, it's really frustrating to have all this kind-of free time (less free than I hoped, but more free than I'll be in a week) and not be able to write AT ALL. And have all these WIPs staring me in the face. Bottom line, AWE really did kill my inspiration when it came to PotC. I'd hoped that this would pass, but there's just nothing I'm really excited about exploring there. Other people are writing wonderful post-trilogy fic, but I don't feel like I have much to add. There's no drive to finish the snippets I do have. The characters aren't "talking" to me anymore. I can't quite care enough, I suppose. There's a lot of reasons for this, many of which I've discussed before--the conclusion of the story and character arcs, the direction of the franchise, the recent wankiness of the fandom, the untrustworthiness of LJ, being busy in RL, etc. No need to go into all that in depth here. But it makes me sad. Like the end of a love affair. The honeymoon over, the bloom off the rose, whatever. A good bit more bitter than sweet. I don't have any fandom to replace it either. Which is probably a good thing, because my obsession du jour really needs to be school for the next ten months, but I miss it. Especially since my creativity in general has ebbed with my fannish interest. (And maybe I'll come back to Pirates...I have again and again for what, four years now? I'm certainly still reading PotC fic written or recced by the authors on my flist, and reading sparrabeth, of course. But I've filtered all the comms off my default list, and I don't miss them at all.) Argh. I have EIGHT voicemails right now, which makes me feel overwhelmed even though I'm sure some of them are actually from people I want to hear from. So instead of dealing with them I am going to pretend that my phone does not exist and go watch Serenity. Or Season Three of Buffy. I haven't decided. Something Jossverse. And maybe read over bits of Deathly Hallows so I've got a chance of having something for tephroliah when she comes back from camp. *desperate attempts to rekindle fannish joy of any kind* Current Mood: apathetic | | 2:46 pm |
Just a heads up... Apparently, posting an external link to anything LJ finds offensive is now grounds for journal suspension. Remember, there are still no clear standards for exactly what LJ finds offensive. Penny Arcade clears this right up for us, however.... For my fandom peeps I am "erinya" at both InsaneJournal and GreatestJournal. I'll be backing up my fic journal to both of those sites in the next couple of days, although I probably won't do so for my personal journal here. Not sure to what degree I'll be cross-posting right now...I'm still in "wait and see" mode, and I doubt I'll leave this journal dormant, but it seems like LJ's not the best place for fannish activity anymore. I'd like to set up a JournalFen account, too...if anybody who's already over there would be willing to help me out with that, I'd be eternally grateful. If not, I may just spring for a paid account--haven't decided on that one yet. ETA: Thanks to zelda, I'm now on JournalFen as well. Current Mood: determined | | Monday, July 23rd, 2007 | | 11:19 am |

Revolution blues There ARE impeachment rumblings coming from the Hill, it seems. Apparently Nancy Pelosi's office was flooded with calls on Friday, and now I'm reading at DKos that House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers has said that if three more Congress Members get behind impeachment he will start the impeachment proceedings. We'll see how real this is in the coming weeks. By the way, House Resolution 333 to impeach Cheney is already with the Judiciary Committee, and has been since April thanks to one Dennis Kucinich and Pelosi's referral. I don't know if there is any formal resolution re: Bush and Gonzalez, but they should both go as well AFAIC. From commenters at DK: a discussion of impeachment procedures, which I found very informative. "Traditionally, the impeachment process begins with the House Judiciary Committee holding hearings. If the committee then passes an impeachment resolution and accompanying articles of impeachment, those go to the full House. And if the resolution and articles are approved (by a simple majority), the president is impeached, the equivalent of being formally charged. That is the first step of a two-step process. There is then a trial in the Senate, with members of the House serving as prosecutor and the chief justice serving as judge. If the Senate finds the president guilty of any of the articles of impeachment – by a two-thirds vote – he is removed from office and the vice president immediately assumes the presidency." (WaPo, 1998, via commenter VeronicaTheViking.) Also from the DKos diary: Everyone can take two minutes on Monday and do two things: phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers' office to express their support for impeachment.I realize impeachment is a politically complicated move for the Dems right now, but it sure seems like it's time. This should go beyond party interest. Current Mood: hopefulCurrent Music: "United States"--Smashing Pumpkins | | Friday, July 20th, 2007 | | 5:37 pm |
You pushed a button and could watch it on the television Okay, our local 94.9 station wins. I switched over to them on the way home and they were playing NIN's Capital G, which I turned way the hell up, thinking "this is a fabulous song for today." Because Reznor doesn't really try to hide what he's talking about, does he? No punches pulled. And why I don't own Year Zero yet, I don't know. The song ends, and the DJ sighs. "Ah. Capital G," he says. "Which stands for George. Who's having a colonoscopy tomorrow." Pause. "Which...well, we all know what that means, right?" Pause. "Cheney's going to be president for a couple hours while they put him under." Reflective pause; another heavy sigh. "But you know, maybe they shouldn't put him under. Maybe he should be awake through the whole thing. Because then he would know how it felt, right? He'd know how it felt to be..." He stops himself in time. "Well, you know." Yes, we do know. We feel your pain, Mr. DJ man. don't give a shit about the temperature in Guatemala don't really see what all the fuss is about ain't gonna worry bout no future generations and a i'm sure somebody's gonna figure it out don't try to tell me how some power can corrupt a person you haven't had enough to know what it's like you're only angry cause you wish you were in my position now nod your head because you know that i'm right - all right!
well i used to stand for something now i'm on my hands and knees traded in my god for this one he signs his name with a capital G Current Mood: impressed | | 9:29 am |
I knew I shouldn't have left my tinfoil hat at home. It seems the Pentagon has issued a warning to Hillary Clinton that her requests for an Iraq withdrawal plan undermines the war effort. Defense Undersecretary Eric Edelman's letter states that "premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq."I'm reading the press articles, but no one seems to have connected this... interesting Pentagon move to Bush's executive order of July 17th establishing that the Treasury can block the assets of any person or organization judged to be "threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or...undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people."Now, the executive order uses the language "act or acts of violence that have the purpose or effect" of undermining the war effort, which is the only reassurance I really have here, but doesn't it sound like the Pentagon is establishing a precedent for further action against Hillary and anyone else speaking out in opposition to the war? Because that's one way to win a national election--freeze the assets of your opponents. Or am I being over-paranoid again? ETA: Holy shit. "Bush administration officials introduced a bold new assertion of executive authority Thursday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege."And I know everyone on my friends list is probably hiding from the Potterdammerung, but something big is happening here, guys. ETA again: matociquala has posted about this as well, with links to further interpretation of the Executive Orders. ETA part three: Seems the language of the Exec. Order of the 17th includes as its targets those who are "purported" to be "promoting acts of violence" or "supporting people who promote acts of violence." I am not comforted. Back to the grindstone, and more memeage Back in SD again as of last night after driving up to Sonoma this weekend for jean_skirt's wedding on 7/7/07, which was lovely and great fun. Got to see and reconnect with numerous people I haven't seen in varying lengths of time. The car could have done better. Not nice to see the check engine light go on less then two weeks after buying it, especially while climbing the Grapevine. I know why, and it's a particularly expensive and polluting why. Poop. (My dad's advice is to ignore it for a year or two. "Maybe it will go off again!" Yeah, and that's the day I'll know my O2 sensor is no longer sensing what it's supposed to. Sigh.) Some more meme responses: evilmissbecky wanted to know ( why fandom loves to give canon characters annoying Sue-offspring ) skybound2 suggested and djarum99 seconded the topic of ( ecoterrorism ) siriouslypeeved asked for my two shiny pennies on ( the pros and cons of foreign aid in Africa )I think there was one more topic suggestion from bravenewcentury, but the new Western spirituality movement will probably take up a post of its own. P.S. I've been watching my f-list only intermittently over the last five days, so if there's something I've missed that you want to bring to my attention, please point me to it. On male characters; favorite books of yore veronica_rich asked for a post in answer to this question: You're very definite on your favorite fictional female characters - but are you as definite on your favorite male characters?( A qualified yes )And, in a similar vein, the_dala asked about favorite books from my childhood, several of which have been mentioned above. The perpetual motion machine I have spent a tremendous amount of money in the last seven days and am somewhat in shock. Most of it was necessary, and it's not that I don't have it to spend, but it still makes me nervous. End of salary rapidly approaching...which is why I'm at work today instead of taking the whole week as vacation like I'd planned and requested. ( Boring life update )So, naturally...meme! Because, you know, I have time. Heh. Give me a topic - fannish, political, religious, whatever - and I'll post about it. Maybe a sentence, maybe a paragraph, maybe a multi-part post complete with pie charts...IF YOU'RE LUCKY. Current Mood: energetic | | Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 | | 1:18 pm |

Ok, twenty-six going on eighty-five. That's quite enough of that. Dear self, Please to be taking me less seriously. Seriously. It's really much more fun that way, you silly thing. Because all this emo srs bzns? Is boring and depressing, and you've been wondering why you're bored and depressed. Well, duh. Much love and far more patience than you give me credit for, Me (the bit that knows better.) P.S. This also applies to writing, fandom, relationships, and life in general. Make a note of it. And play more. K? Current Mood: cheerful | | Friday, June 22nd, 2007 | | 9:39 am |
One in six.... One in six hate crimes are motivated by the victim's sexual orientation. Yet Federal laws don't protect these people. Watch the video. Then tell your Senators to support the Matthew Shepard Act.

Whaaa? The banner ad on my Yahoo mailbox shows a picture of a young guy holding his head in agony while a girl who can only be described as bitchy-looking points at him angrily. Tagline: "New girlfriend + lots of opinions = major headache." (Advil, the every pain medicine!) O_o Well, darn those uppity womens, making the poor men's heads hurt with their opinions! Don't they know that ladies should be seen and not heard? (...Now I go to look at cheap cars. Woe.) ETA: Getting home from work was interesting today. Apparently there was a freakin' gang shooting across the street from my house. Outside the 7-11 where I buy my Ben & Jerry's. There are news crews and a helicopter and a police car in our driveway. Gotta love this neighborhood...and suddenly I'm not THAT sad about moving out. Current Mood: possibly overreacting | | Thursday, June 14th, 2007 | | 2:11 pm |
